Login.gov is a service that offers secure and private online access to government programs, such as federal benefits, services and applications. With a Login.gov account, you can sign into multiple government websites with the same email address and password. Login.gov helps keep your USAJOBS profile and information secure.
How do I get a Login.gov account?
Login.gov uses two-factor authentication, and stronger passwords, that meet new National Institute of Standards of Technology requirements for secure validation and verification.
If you are creating a USAJOBS profile, we'll walk you through the steps to create your Login.gov account on USAJOBS before you create your USAJOBS profile.
If you have a Login.gov account, but no USAJOBS profile, create an account using the same email address in your Login.gov account.
You need to:
- Enter an email address—use the same email address you use for Login.gov if you already have an account. We recommend you use personal email rather than a work or .gov, .mil or .edu email. We'll send you an email asking you to confirm your email.
- Create a new password.
- Select your first authentication method—having another way to sign in keeps your account more secure than using only a password. You can choose between text messages, phone calls, an authentication application, a security key, or backup codes. Government employees can also use their PIV card or CAC.
- Select a backup method of authentication—you need to select a backup method, in case you don't have access to your first choice (for example you don't have access to your phone).
Once you create a login.gov account, you'll come back to USAJOBS to link to your existing profile, or create a new profile if you don't have one. You only need to create your account and link it once.
What email address do I use to create a Login.gov account?
We recommend you don't use a .gov, .mil, .edu or any other work email address. Instead, you should use a non-government and non-work email address. If you currently use one of these email types for Login.gov, you can change it AFTER you get through the account set-up process.
If you lose access to your email address you use to sign in, you may lose access to your USAJOBS.gov profile. You can add a federal email address as a secondary email address to your USAJOBS profile, but you can't use it to sign in unless you add it to Login.gov.

Can I share a Login.gov account with another person?
No. Each person needs their own Login.gov account and USAJOBS profile when applying to jobs because applications use your information when you apply to jobs.
